# /home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link/D-Link setup on Lenovo 130603.txt #***************************************** # 01Jun2013 Lenovo with D'Link PCI board - can't seem to launch ndiswrapper # I copied drt2860.inf from : /home/bill/System maintenance/ndiswrapper/etc_ndiswrapper/drt2860/ to : /home/bill/bin/ 1. See old notes for ndiswrapper install : /home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link/D-Link driver install.txt several commands might help show the "status" of the ndiswrapper : modprobe ndiswrapper >> FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found $ nm-tool -> shows wlan0 is disconnected, Driver: rt2800pci, HW address : 14:D6:4D:AB:5F:09 2. Make a new directory (old name) : /home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link Wireless N 150 Desktop PCI Adapter wifi/ 1. I pasted contents of /home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link to the reincarnated D-Link Wireless N 150 Desktop PCI Adapter wifi 2. command line in terminal : $ modprobe ndiswrapper >> FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found (so that didn't work) 3. Go back a step : $ ndiswrapper -i "/home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link Wireless N 150 Desktop PCI Adapter wifi/Drt2860.inf" >> driver drt2860 is already installed -> so this isn't the problem 4. Now try : $ ndiswrapper -l >> drt2860 : driver installed device (1814:3060) present (alternate driver rt2800pci) 5. This looks promising. Now : $ modprobe ndiswrapper >> FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found ++++++ 03Jun2013 - back at it! 6. Nuts - back to where I started. Maybe mixup between rt2800pci and drt2860 is problem. Remove drt2860 and seeks $ ndiswrapper -r drt2860 >> cannot unlink file for /etc/ndiswrapper/drt2860/1814:3060.5.conf: Permission denied at /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper line 126 7. Cool - here are some clues! initiate sudo, but nuke the rt2800pci $ sudo ndiswrapper -r rt2800pci >> couldn't delete /etc/ndiswrapper/rt2800pci: No such file or directory 8. HEY!! in old file, the driver is "ndiswrapper", not rt2800pci!! Remove drt2860 then reinstall : $ sudo ndiswrapper -r drt2860 >> no response at all $ nm-tool >> for device wlan0 still shows driver rt2800pci $ ndiswrapper -l >> no response at all (must have worked) $ bash /home/bill/bin/test_script.txt (the script has : ndiswrapper -i "/home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link Wireless N 150 Desktop PCI Adapter wifi/Drt2860.inf" ) >> installing drt2860 $ nm-tool >> still shows driver rt2800pci ???? $ ndiswrapper -l >> same result as for point #4 above 9. Maybe drt2860 isn't the problem, as it may be properly installed? Try modprobe again... $ modprobe ndiswrapper >> same response as points above #2.2 and #5 $ sudo modprobe ndiswrapper >> FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found 10. From "/home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link/D-Link driver install.txt" 4.2.1 $ sudo lshw -C network >> shows the WRONG Wireless interface ??? product: RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T1R, vendor: Ralink corp., serial: 14:d6:4d:ab:5f:09 I checked the PCI card : The brand IS D-Link!?!?!!! Again, remove drt2860, then see if rt2800pci is active $ sudo ndiswrapper -r drt2860 >> no response at all $ sudo lshw -C network >> same response as point #10.1 above $ ndiswrapper -l >> no response at all - like point #8.3 above, but unlike point #4 & #8.6 11. check the Kubuntu system devices output : Application launcher -> System -> Network tools >> NOW it shows this enabled and active ???? Why ?? Well, let's try it! Again, I can't enter the wireless security password -> maybe I have to be admin to do that? $ sudo -i ~# (it's ready for input - but how to launch Network tools as superuser?) GUI What a fuck up by Kubuntu!!! I could not set the password in "Network Tools", but after spending time starting up the admin user (another fuck-up! - it defaulted to a blank Ubuntu screen with NO Application launcher or anything!), GUI I used AppLaunch -> System -> System Settings -> Network Connections, which then allowed me to use the SAME interface as "Network Tools", nly this time I COULD enter the cellphone pwd! When I logged in again as bill, I still had to re=-enter the pwd, but at least I could do that. 12. While wlan0 is enabled and active - rekonq still cannot connect!! Nor can FireFox. ++++++ end of 03Jun2013 - try again later 13. Startup of computer, immediately type : $ sudo modprobe ndiswrapper >> FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found -> this doesn't look good! GUI Application launcher -> System -> System Tools -> Network connections : this allowed me to input pwd GUI as per 10.0 above check the Kubuntu system devices output : Application launcher -> System -> Network tools >> again, it shows this enabled and active ???? Why ?? GUI retry Application launcher -> Settings -> System Settings -> Network Settings -> Network connections -> Edit "HowellAndroidAP3099-Jun20113" : again - the pwd is blank, so it isn't retained? I do get an error window when I click on "Edit" -> Error - No agents were available for this request but I simply click on "OK" and t proceeds, but again, no pwd shows and it has to be re-entered GUI "Proxy - System Settings" : is "Configure the proxy server used"? -> set this to "Detect proxy configuration automatically" $ ndiswrapper -l [ I should get : drt2860 : driver installed <\n> device (1814:3060) present (alternate driver rt2800pci) ] >> nothing, so this hasn't worked $ /home/bill/bin/test_script.txt [this contains $ ndiswrapper -i "/home/bill/System maintenance/D-Link Wireless N 150 Desktop PCI Adapter wifi/Drt2860.inf" (as per point #3 above)] >> installing drt2860 ... [WOW! it has to be reinstalled every day!?!?] $ ndiswrapper -l >> drt2860 : driver installed <\n> device (1814:3060) present (alternate driver rt2800pci) [NOW I DO get the right response!] $ sudo lshw -C network [note that the response is ALWAYS delayed - must be looking up and testing hardware or something] >> description: Wireless interface product: RT3060 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R vendor: Raling corp. physical id: 9 bus info: pci@0000:0a:09.0 logical namke: wlan0 version: 00 serial: 14:d6:4d:ab:5f:09 width: 32 bits clock: 33 MHz capabilities: [...long list...] configuration: [...long list...] resources: irq:20 memory:d3200000-d320ffff Still no connection... 14. Is the problem AppArmor? Yikes!! - AppArmor is not even installed!! (see /home/bill/System maintenance/ArpArmour/AppArmor note.txt) $ sudo service apparmor status >"/home/bill/System maintenance/apparmor/130604 apparmor status.txt" WRONG - I don't have a profile, but apparmor is running : 46 profiles loaded, of which 23 enforce mode, 23 complain mode see "/home/bill/System maintenance/apparmor/130604 apparmor status.txt" 15. Is the problem the firewall? (what is the name of the firewall?) Check firewall!
