Telnet is almost certainly not amongst them. My guess is that your router is accepting telnet connections. I found my new tp-link router accepts telnet and ftp from the internet by defualt, which horrified me. On the tp-link router, I fixed it by configuring a "virtual host" in the NAT configuration so that it has to forward all incoming connections to an internal server (which doesn't reply in my case). If it's an Android you would need software to enable it to be pinged in the first place. So yes you need to download something. They aren't automagically enabled to be pinged by the user from a computer. Google has Android Device Manager: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.adm&hl=en There are other third party apps as well. I personally have Cerberus. Never used an iAnything so I can't help you there. I know of no way a feature phone can be pinged except by law enforcement or the carrier. http://superuser.com/questions/586469/how-to-ping-an-ip-address-from-an-android-device asked Apr 23 '13 at 9:47 HPM, edited Apr 19 at 21:47 Peter Mortensen Is there a way to ping an IP address from an Android device (like an Arc S or LG PRADA)? Is there a Android built-in application or am I to download an app for my task? >> Answer: edited Apr 23 '13 at 11:36 Journeyman Geek Using connectbot - (google play), you can access a local shell and use the ping command. Start it up, select "local" from the list, leave Nickname as it is, and select OK with the keyboard. --- I've also added a google play link to connectbot. It hasn't been updated in a while - while changing the link and the software is above and beyond what I am comfortable editing, VX Connectbot is a newer fork, and probably a better choice. – Journeyman Geek Apr 23 '13 at 11:41 https://connectbot.org/ ConnectBot is a secure shell client for the Android platform. Its ultimate goal is to create a secure connection through which you can use a shell on a remote machine and transfer files back and forth to your phone. >> Howell : This is CLIENT ssh, no good for me +-----+ Google Android on Samsung Galaxy IV try USB tethering!! >> Nyet >>> Conclusion : Not the way to go.
