Thunderbird -> Menu -> Account settings -> for IJCNN2015-INNS-Killarney-Ireland@BillHowell.ca -> Server settings
   ->  Security settings ->  [Connection security = None] [Authentication method = Password, transmitted insecurely]
Didn't help : the problem was due to "IJCNN@BillHowell.ca being in the list of :
Thunderbird -> Menu -> Account settings -> for Outgoing server (SMTP) -> Outgoing server (SMTP) settings
I removed it, now it works OK!
