I'm a long time user of Linux Mint Debian. Most things run fine, and the OS is the fastest and simplest I've been using. There's one thing that I'd like to get right : I'd like to have Nvidia drivers working, so that I can have better performance watching 60 fps videos on youtube in full HD, possibility to use ultra-HD from time to time (it lags even with the Nvidia GPU), and the possibility to run Deep Learning Neural Network software on the GPU. My problem is that as soon as I install nvidia drivers and reboot, I get a message saying that Cinnamon has crashed and is running in safe mode (the exact message is in french). It works in safe mode, but that's not fun. I also tried the software that enables to render the Nvidia pictures through the intel driver (Bumblebee or Optimus or something like that). It works but it is of no use for Youtube video : as the final rendering is done through Intel's display hardware, it lags while displaying full HD videos in 60 fps. I'm currently in safe mode with the latest nvidia driver installed and reconfigured (I've got a backup of my system at hand if no solution can be found). What information should I post ? Top +--+ Re: Cinnamon crashes with Nvidia drivers Post by Pio2001 » Tue Aug 13, 2019 3:53 pm Hi, I have purged all the Nvidia packages thanks to your tip. Then I installed the 418 driver again. I rebooted. Then I installed Nvidia-settings. But when I run it, I get the following message : temp.png If I click on Valider, I only have the two items that you can see in the menu. So I installed nvidia-xconfig and ran it. Then I rebooted (I don't know how to restart the X server)... and I got the black screen with the blinking cursor. I had to restore the system once again. I'm giving up. Nvidia drivers are not meant to work with my system. In this state the computer goes into a low power mode, but the system still requires power to keep the data in RAM. To be clear, Suspend does not turn off your computer. To me, this is just like what happens when I’m finished working at a coffee shop and I close the lid on my laptop (or click “Sleep” on my MacBook Pro). The system saves the current state to RAM memory, and it’s ready to go again as soon as I open the laptop lid again. Hibernate mode Conversely, Hibernate is a bit of a deeper sleep. Hibernate mode moves the current contents of memory into swap space. In this state the computer does not require power. To be clear, the computer is completely powered off with Hibernate. Given this definition, the name Hibernate seems to make a little more sense. Because it doesn’t require power, it really is like a bear going to sleep for the winter. Linux Suspend vs Hibernate As you can see from those definitions, there’s a significant different between Suspend and Hibernate. Suspend is the same as Sleep mode on MacOS, while Hibernate is something completely different, almost like shutting your computer down completely, but with the added benefit that the system state will be restored exactly as it was when the computer is rebooted. >> Hibernate doesn't work on Dell64 (as in the past) ************************* #] 14Sep2019 Linux Mint "Getting Started" Getting started An uncomplicated way to manage your firewall, powered by ufw. CONCLUSION : Cinnamon will be supported, but not KDE (my kwrite!?), and Mate not yet supported in LMDE3 https://linuxmint.com/release.php?id=33 >> Me - Upgrade in November https://www.zdnet.com/article/hands-on-linux-mint-debian-edition-3-beta/ It appears that this release will have only the Cinnamon desktop -- although I'm not going to be surprised if the outcry resulting from dropping the MATE version causes them to reconsider some time after the release. https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-linux-mint-desktop-continues-to-lead-the-rest/ First, as I mentioned earlier, the Cinnamon interface is a lot quicker. It's also, to my eye, much more attractive. If you prefer, you can now run Mint 19 with the Xfce 4.12 or MATE 1.20 desktops. But Mint's developers have decided to no longer support KDE. For KDE with Ubuntu Linux under it, they -- and I -- recommend Kubuntu. https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3418 Monthly News – October 2017 KDE Edition In continuation with what’s been done in the past, Linux Mint 18.3 will feature a KDE edition, but it will be the last release to do so. >> YIKES! my kwrite! https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_tara_cinnamon_whatsnew.php New features in Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon *********************** #] 07Oct2018 Linux Mint system image https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sylvia_mate_whatsnew.php Posted some time before 2018 New features in Linux Mint 18.3 MATE Linux Mint 18.3 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2021. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable to use. System Snapshots Linux Mint 18.3 features Timeshift, a tool dedicated to system snapshots. Timeshift is the perfect companion to the Linux Mint Backup Tool. It doesn't save your personal data, it saves everything else. Thanks to Timeshift you can create backups of the operating system itself. You deleted system files by mistake? You can recover them. You upgraded to a newer release and something isn't working well anymore? You can go back in time. System Reports A new tool called "System Reports" was developed for Linux Mint 18.3. Its goal is to generate reports when software crashes occur, and to show information relevant to your computer and your environment. Crash Reports When a crash occurs, information is now gathered and a crash report is generated. The "System Reports" tool lists the crashes and is able to generate stack traces for them: When developers aren't able to reproduce a bug, that information is very useful. It's always been very difficult for non-experienced users to produce core dumps or stack traces. This tool helps a lot with that. Information Reports In addition to crash reports, the tool is also able to show information reports. Unlike the release notes which show the same generic information to everybody, information reports are targeted at particular users, particular hardware, particular cases. Each report is able to detect its own relevance based on your environment, the desktop you're using, your CPU, your graphic cards...etc. The development team will use this tool to write reports and to address certain issues by showing information, workarounds, troubleshooting techniques which can help users affected by them. Reports can even include actions and resolutions. Sometimes the development team knows how to solve a particular problem, but the solution cannot or should not be taken on the user's behalf. In those cases a report can simply ask the user and solving an issue can be as simple as a click on a button. *********************** #] 30Aug2018 search "Thunderbird email and very slow" http://kb.mozillazine.org/Performance_%28Thunderbird%29 >> A few items : Most performance problems are due to antivirus software, a poorly performing computer, or the disk system. See if it is caused by an add-on by temporarily disabling all add-ons using "Help -> Restart with Add-ons Disabled". [1]. The Lightning add-on can also slow performance. The Ubuntu Unity integration add-on seems to drastically slow downloading large attachments. [2] Thunderbird loads a folder's *.msf file into memory whenever it opens the folder. By default it keeps up to 30 *.msf files open for 5 minutes (and their contents in memory), unless they are "special" folders, which it never closes. It loads the inbox.msf file for every account on startup. The best way to minimize the amount of memory used is to archive messages you have already read or otherwise no longer need in Inbox into folders that you rarely open. Moving a message to an archive folder opens it, so consider archiving messages by by year and month rather than yearly so that the archive being used doesn't get excessively large. [4] Not compacting the Inbox folder often enough may cause performance problems. Deleted messages aren't physically deleted until the folder is compacted, so for example Thunderbird might be loading a 100MB folder index when it displays a Inbox folder with just a few messages. Compacting is automatic (starting in version 5), but it defaults to only doing that if 20MB of space is wasted. Consider lowering that to 1MB. If you are using a IMAP account, consider checking "Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings -> Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit " That will physically remove any deleted messages in the inbox using a different mechanism, when you exit Thunderbird. Thunderbird appears to parse the contents of the entire Inbox folder when it downloads new mail for POP accounts. If the folder contains messages with certain missing headers (typically due to spam or a corrupted folder) it can get caught in a loop. The workaround (after first backing up your profile folder!) would be to move all of the Inbox folders messages to another folder (where you can identify and delete the troublesome messages later on) and compact the Inbox. In the worst case you might need to copy the messages in your Inbox to another folder, exit Thunderbird, back up your profile, delete both the "Inbox." and "Inbox.msf" files for that account in your profile and then run Thunderbird again. It will create a new empty Inbox folder if you do that. >> Ah Hah! unseen error window : There was an error while getting the sharing information net usershare info returned with signal 11 +-----+ https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-mint-84/nemo-crashes-frequently-4175614062/ 09-22-2017, 11:58 AM, ondoho, LQ Addict, Registered: Dec 2013 Initializing nemo-dropbox 3.4.0 Nemo-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: mkdir failed on directory /var/run/samba/msg.lock: Permission denied net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. The swappiness parameter controls the tendency of the kernel to move processes out of physical memory and onto the swap disk. Because disks are much slower than RAM, this can lead to slower response times for system and applications if processes are too aggressively moved out of memory. swappiness can have a value of between 0 and 100 swappiness=0 tells the kernel to avoid swapping processes out of physical memory for as long as possible swappiness=100 tells the kernel to aggressively swap processes out of physical memory and move them to swap cache The default setting in Ubuntu is swappiness=60. Reducing the default value of swappiness will probably improve overall performance for a typical Ubuntu desktop installation. A value of swappiness=10 is recommended, but feel free to experiment. Note: Ubuntu server installations have different performance requirements to desktop systems, and the default value of 60 is likely more suitable. To check the swappiness value cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness To change the swappiness value A temporary change (lost on reboot) with a swappiness value of 10 can be made with sudo sysctl vm.swappiness=10 To make a change permanent, edit the configuration file with your favorite editor: gksudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf Search for vm.swappiness and change its value as desired. If vm.swappiness does not exist, add it to the end of the file like so: vm.swappiness=10 Save the file and reboot. ********************* #] 11Aug2017 08:22 web-search "Linux and SWAP drive" https://www.linux.com/news/all-about-linux-swap-space The Linux Foundation, September 7, 2007 All about Linux swap space, By Gary Sims $ sudo swapon -s >> There is no swap space (as indicated by $ free -m) I need to create a swap partition! web-search "Linux and create a SWAP partition after install" SHORT ANSWER - DON'T try to resize boot partition (I think I did do this before, but on Toshiba GParted won't let me). Create a swap file instead https://askubuntu.com/questions/33697/how-do-i-add-a-swap-partition-after-system-installation +-----+ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq Creating the swap partition Boot to Ubuntu install CD (I'm on Natty) and choose the option to run Ubuntu now Go to system -> GParted Partition Editor Delete the swap partition and, if there is nothing else in it, the extended partition that holds it. (If by some miracle you're able to resize your swap partition from here, I imagine your life will be a lot easier than mine.) Decrease the size of your primary partition by the amount you want your new swap to be (I made mine 2x RAM + 500MB just to be safe). The easiest way to do this is to fill in the amount of space you want swap to be in the "free space following" field In the free space that has now been created, choose new, type linux-swap and you can name the partition "swap" if you like Hit the *Apply* button (should be a check mark) to write the changes to disk When done, reboot back into Ubuntu Activating the swap partition (If your swap is on your primary hard drive, you don't need to do anything here.) Now you need to find what partition your swap is on and what its UUID is. UUID?! you say? Well that's the Universally Unique IDentifier for the partition so you can reference it even if it's on a different mount point from boot-to-boot due to adding disks, etc. Pull up a terminal and run gksu gparted & and enter your root password. The & lets this process run while still giving you access to the command line. Right-click on your swap partition and choose *Information*. You should see the **Path** and **UUID** listed there. Keep this open for further reference. Run gksu gedit /etc/fstab & and look for the line that has *swap* in it. It should be the third column, separated by spaces or tabs. You can either use the path or the UUID to tell Linux where to find your swap partition. I recommend UUID because it'll stay constant even if you move the partition around or the disk somehow becomes sdb instead of sda or something like that. Make the appropriate edits and save the file. Your line should look something like this if you used UUID (with your UUID instead, of course): UUID=41e86209-3802-424b-9a9d-d7683142dab7 none swap sw 0 0 or this if you used path: /dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0 Save the file. If you're running an older version, Linux Mint always puts an application window, when not maximized, in the left-top corner of the desktop by default. In that case, you can use this handy tool gDevilspie to automatically detect and move the window of an application, such as the Terminal app, to the center of the desktop. You just need to set it up once for the applications you need and it's good for use each time you log into the system. Go to Menu > Accessories > gDevilspie (Download gDevilspie if not installed) Tick "Start devilspie daemon automatically at login" Click the Add button and name a new rule. Under the Matching tab, tick 'application_name' and type Terminal, for example, in the 'matches' box. Under the Actions tab, tick 'center'. Click the Save button, then the Start button. Ideally, the window manager in Linux Mint should restore the last known position of an application window, but it doesn't do that unless an application remembers its own window position. Using this tool, however, you can do more controls over the application windows by the rules you set. Note 1: At time of checking, a bug was reported that gDevilspie did not start. But there's a workaround as follows: Press Alt-F2, type gksu gedit and press Enter. Browse to File System > usr > bin and open up gdevilspie. Search for this line self.UpdateAutostartStatus() and comment it out by adding # at the beginning of the line. Save the file and restart gDevilspie. Note 2: If you've encountered an error when starting the devilspie daemon, try install devilspie in the Terminal with the command below: sudo apt-get install devilspie . >> I installed Devilspie with Software Manager http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/48984/how-can-i-set-the-position-that-terminal-opens-at @Sigur - you could try using devilspie to specify the position. Create a file ~/.devilpie/lxterminal.ds with this content (replace X and Y as per your taste): (if (is (application_name) "lxterminal") (begin (geometry "+200+350") ) ) save, run devilspie then launch lxterminal with desired size: lxterminal --geometry=COLxROW. It should be automatically positioned where you want. It works OK in Gnome 3 at least. – don_crissti Sep 24 '12 at 16:07 https://wiki.gnome.org/DevilsPie Script Files Devil's Pie looks for scripts ending with ".ds" in a ".devilspie/" directory in your home directory. To get started writing scripts, you must first create this directory, then create script files within it. Each script file must contain exactly one expression (see below for information on the "begin" expression which lets you group multiple expressions within one.) Each time a new window is created, Devil's Pie executes each script that ends with the ".ds" extension in the ~/.devilspie directory. >> I made a coupel of scripts, but they didn't seem to kick in... >> OOPS! changed to devilspie2 /home/bill/.config/devilspie2 /usr/share/doc/devilspie2 I install lua via Software Manager >> script isn't working so far??? #] 05Mar2017 - had [x,y] versus [width, height] switched THIS IS AWESOME!!! ***************** #] 04Mar2017 Suspend and Hibernate http://askubuntu.com/questions/1792/how-can-i-suspend-hibernate-from-command-line How can I suspend/hibernate from command line? Unplug and Plug the pen drive back in and it will be mounted with the new label name. The GUI way For this you need the Gparted software. Install it if you don’t have it already. Open the software as a super user, and select the pen drive from GParted>Devices> Unmount the device if it hasn’t been, by right clicking on it. To change a partition's label, follow these directions. (Be careful using Partition Editor, as it's capable of making your computer completely unusable if you do the wrong thing.) - Open the System > Administration menu and see if there's an entry for GParted (previously Partition Editor). - If there is, launch it. If there isn't, install the "gparted" package and it should now appear in the menu. Enter your password when prompted. - Disk drives are divided up into partitions. To find the partition you want to re-label, you first have to find the disk drive that contains it, using the drop-down menu in the upper right. It will show a device name like /dev/sdb and the drive's total size in parentheses. After selecting a drive, you will see a list of all partitions on that drive. - If the partition is mounted (has a key icon next to it), right-click on the partition and select Unmount. - With the key icon gone, right-click on the partition and select Label. If you can't select it, install the ntfsprogs package. - Enter the new partition name and press Ok. - The label change is now pending, but has not been completed. Press the Apply button near the top of the window. After confirming, it should say "All operations successfully completed". On Linux distributions that don’t use sudo, you’ll have to log in as root with the su command first. Here’s the basic syntax of the command: sudo rtcwake -m [type of suspend] -s [number of seconds] For example, the following command suspends your system to disk (hibernates it) and wakes it up 60 seconds later: sudo rtcwake -m disk -s 60 Types of Suspend The -m switch accepts the following types of suspend: standby – Standby offers little power savings, but restoring to a running system is very quick. This is the default mode if you omit the -m switch. mem – Suspend to RAM. This offers significant power savings – everything is put into a low-power state, except your RAM. The contents of your memory are preserved. disk – Suspend to disk. The contents of your memory are written to disk and your computer is powered off. The computer will turn on and its state will be restored when the timer completes. off – Turn the computer off completely. rtcwake’s man page notes that restoring from “off” isn’t officially supported by the ACPI specification, but this works with many computers anyway. no – Don’t suspend the computer immediately, just set the wakeup time. For example, you could tell your computer to wake up at 6am. After that, can put it to sleep manually at 11pm or 1am – either way, it will wake up at 6am. http://en.code-bude.net/2013/04/21/how-to-edit-linux-mint-start-menu/ posted on April 21, 2013 by Raffi The solution for the problem is a little program called “alacarte”, which you can install by Linux Mint’s software management. You can run gnome-panel to have them show up. Do Super(aka Start)-Alt-Right-click on them to add, remove panels, or to change properties. The same to add a feature to any given panel, The missing feature you are describing is probably the "Menu bar" item you can add. The task pane is called "Window list" - or you can choose "Window panel" Another great component to add would be "Indicator applet complete" It is nearly impossible to figure out how to remove or move what you've added. So here it is: Super(aka Start)-Alt-Right-click on a particular feature you've added, and you'll see a Move/Remove menu. Choose Move and then you can grab that item and move around. Another useful tip I learned is that in any of those desktops you can run (Alt-F2) unity to add unity or gnome-panel to add that panel. So you can sort of combine things. Add your addition to the start-up items to make it permanent. Howell - in a terminal $ sudo apt-get install gnome-panel $ gnome-panel Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running http://scienceblogs.com/gregladen/2014/04/24/10-or-20-things-to-do-after-installing-ubuntu-14-04-trusty-tahr/ 10 Or 20 Things To Do After Installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr Rant Posted by Greg Laden on April 24, 2014 He suggests : sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras +-----+ Install classic menu indicator This is a pretty important applet. Retype the script with a linux editor, and you'll be OK. Or search on the dos2unix and unix2dos utilities which will make the conversions for you. <--> http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5241625/find-and-copy-files i faced an issue something like this... Actually,in two ways you can process find command output in copy command 1.If find command's out put doesn't contain any space i.e if file name dose't contain space in it then you can use below mentioned command: Syntax: find | xargs cp -t Example: find -mtime -1 -type f | xargs cp -t inner/ 2.But most of the time our porduction data files might contain space init.So most of time below mentioned command if efficient Syntax: find -exec cp '{}' \; Example find -mtime -1 -type f -exec cp '{}' inner/ \; In the second example, last part i.e semi-colon is also considered as part of find command, that should be escaped before press the enter button.Otherwise you will get an error something like this find: missing argument to `-exec' *your case every this is perfect, copy command syntax is wrong in order to copy find file into /home/shantanu/tosend.Below mentioned command will work... find /home/shantanu/processed/ -name '*2011*.xml' -exec cp {} /home/shantanu/tosend \; answered Dec 7 '13 at 18:18 Thiyagu ATR **************************** #] 03Apr2014 Can't empty trash! http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=898323 August 23rd, bubba_169, Join Date: Jul 2007, Location: UK, Beans: 215, Distro: Ubuntu Re: Cannot empty recycle bin! When nautilus is open press ctrl+h to show hidden files and folders, then go to filesystem/home/yourname/.local/share/trash and you should see 2 folders named files and info. If you empty these folders you should be rid of those files in your trash. If you have other partitions mounted you may also want to clear their trash too so go to the root of the partition, eg sda2 might be mounted at /media/sda2, and look for a folder called trash-#### where ### is a number.
