Thanks to an initially small number of brave "solid thinkers" (in my mind less than one in ten thousand), who for some reason can do that, and thanks to the emergence of groups like the International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC), the tide seems to be changing, and more scientists seem to be willing to reconsider their beliefs. Strangely, the non-scientific public seems to be able to smell a con-science and con-scientists better than the experts, and have lead (along with the maverick scientists), rather than trailed, the vast majority of scientists. After a quck look, although I'm familiar with many of the details and themes in "Climate Change Reconsidered II: Physical Science" (http://climatechangereconsidered.org/), there are always fun things to learn, and to learn about science and scientists in documents like these. May 14, 2013 at 10:02 am The framework of Gradualism/Uniformitarianism is pervasive in science today. Yet 30 years ago paleontologist Stephen J Gould had to address the fact that the vast majority of evolution occurred during momentary surges such as the Cambrian Explosion. In between the explosions of species almost nothing happened. The evidence on the ground conflicted with Darwinian evolution almost before Darwin had personally evolved into ashes and dust. The Gradualism had to be “adjusted”, and Gould called the adjustment “Punctuated Equilibrium” (PE). It meant that Gradualism is the normal static state, but when change comes it comes with a bang. +-----+ http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/05/13/what-we-dont-know/ What We Don’t Know Posted on May 13, 2013 by Willis Eschenbach Guest Post by Willis Eschenbach Back in August 2010, WUWT ran an article wherein it was claimed that variations in the sun changed the rate of radioactive decay. This, of course, flew in the face of years and years of experimental evidence, starting with the Curies, that the rate of radioactive decay is constant, unaffected by pressure or temperature or anything else. 13Apr11 Positive-definite people - wrong answers but the right game - Positive-definite people are almost invariably wrong except when making snap ROUTINE decisions. So why are they so successful in organisations? Perhaps part of the answers lies in the advantage of quick routine decsions most of the time, and the reality that analysis and decisions in complex situations is rarely certain, and logic may not be a good tool anyways. In these cses a RANDOM component in decision-making is essential, and people who are sure of themselves even when they are in reality lost provide at least some of that, but strongly flavoured by personal biases and habits of thinking. If they make too many mistakes, there is a chance that they can be replaced, for the next random-input positive-definite person with different biases! I shall take a holistic approach to the future of Europe. I have developed a conceptual framework, which has guided me in my decisions throughout my adult life. The framework is much broader than the financial markets; it deals with the relationship between thinking and reality. What makes that relationship so complicated is that the thoughts and actions of participants are part of the reality they have to think about. Their thinking serves a dual function: on the one hand they try to understand the world in which they live – that is the cognitive function; on the other, they want to influence the events in which they participate – that is the manipulative function. The two functions interfere with each other – I call the interference reflexivity. The cornerstone of my conceptual framework is the human uncertainty principle, which is based on the twin pillars of fallibility and reflexivity. The human uncertainty principle has far reaching implications for scientific method. It applies only to social phenomena and thereby it separates the social sciences from the natural sciences. Economic theory has sought to imitate the natural sciences, particularly Newtonian physics. Consequently my conceptual framework is in direct conflict with mainstream economic theory. The differences are especially pronounced in dealing with financial problems in general and the euro crisis in particular. Mainstream economics has pursued timelessly and universally valid laws whose validity can be tested by reference to the facts. I contend that the facts produced by social processes do not constitute a reliable criterion for judging the validity of theories because of the human uncertainty principle. I do not deny the possibility of establishing universally and timelessly valid laws – the human uncertainty principle is one of them – but I consider such laws too vague and general to be of much use in producing specific predictions and explanations. ************** >>> MINDCODE >>>>>> Neuro-evolution 18Jan2018 I posted to Facebook : https://www.oreilly.com/ideas/neuroevolution-a-different-kind-of-deep-learning Neuroevolution: A different kind of deep learning Is this the new BIG THING in AI (actually CI - Computational Intelligence), well beyond Deep Learning neural nets, and much more profound? When parallel fibers are active, Purkinje cells will fire action potentials at a rate proportional to the number of parallel fiber activated, yet when the climbing fiber is active, the Purkinje cell will generate a burst of action potentials occurring at a really high rate, and then will stop firing altogether. This is called a complex spike. If this is sounding a bit like a computer is because that's what it is. The cerebellum is basically an error correction machine. Whenever you perform a motor action, such as picking your nose, your cerebellum is continuously adjusting your arm movement to make sure that your finger expertly reaches your nostril, and doesn't, for example, poke your eye. Thus your cerebellum is constantly comparing the movement that you intended to do with what you are actually doing and makes little adjustments such that the two match as best as possible. Parallel fibers continuously set the gain of this adjustment, while climbing fibers are active when an error is detected. So without a cerebellum, you'd be mostly fine, but would be highly uncoordinated to say the least. And at the center of this computation is the Purkinje cell. This type of adjustment is also useful for mediating certain types of associative learning, such as classical conditioning, but that's the topic for another post. Haenschel C, Bittner RA, Haertling F, Rotarska-Jagiela A, Maurer K, Singer W, Linden DE. Laboratory for Neurophysiology and Neuroimaging, Department of Psychiatry, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, and Max Planck Institute for Brain Research, Frankfurt, Germany. haenschel@mpih-frankfurt.mpg.de CONTEXT: Working memory (WM) deficits in patients with schizophrenia have mainly been associated with prefrontal dysfunction. However, the contribution of perceptual deficits and abnormalities in sensory areas has not been explored. The present study closes this important gap in our understanding of WM dysfunction in schizophrenia by monitoring neural activity during WM encoding and retrieval with event-related potentials (ERPs) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neurophysiological changes that contribute to WM impairment in early-onset schizophrenia at perceptual and cognitive stages using the ERP components P1, P3a, P370, and P570 and fMRI data from extrastriate visual areas. DESIGN: We conducted the study between June 1, 2003, and December 20, 2006. Electroencephalographic and fMRI data were acquired separately during a visual delayed discrimination task. Participants encoded up to 3 abstract shapes that were presented sequentially for 600 milliseconds each and decided after a 12-second delay whether a probe matched 1 of the sample stimuli. SETTING: Between-group study at an inpatient psychiatric hospital and outpatient psychiatric facilities. PARTICIPANTS: Seventeen adolescents with early-onset schizophrenia according to DSM-IV criteria and 17 matched controls participated in the study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Amplitude of the ERP components P1, P3a, P370, and P570 and the fMRI signal from extrastriate visual areas. RESULTS: The P1 amplitude was reduced in patients during encoding and retrieval. The P1 amplitude increased with WM load during encoding only in controls. In this group, a stronger P1 amplitude increase predicted better WM performance. The P1 reduction was mirrored by reduced activation of visual areas in patients in fMRI. The P370 amplitude during encoding and retrieval was also reduced in patients. CONCLUSIONS: The P1 amplitude reduction indicates an early visual deficit in adolescents with schizophrenia. Our findings suggest that P1 is of particular relevance for successful WM encoding. Early visual deficits contribute to impaired WM in schizophrenia in addition to deficits in later memory-related processes. Potential drivers of "sloshing" might be Chandler wobbles of the Earth's axis, Length Of Day (LOD) changes that can be related to astronomical parameters (sun/earth/moon especially, as has been discussed by Paul Vaughan and many others before him, but perhaps also effects during eclipses of other phenomena), "jerks" from earthquakes/tsunamis, some electrical effects, etc (to throw out some ideas I've come across). For several years, I have a chart on my kitchen wall from the Canadian Geological Survey that shows estimates of sea levels over the last ~540 My (since roughly the start of the Cambrian period (start of Paleozoic era). As a very rough estimate, the maximum swing in sea level shown is ~600 meters, with 5 icebox periods showing current sea levels (depending on how one defines icebox). I hadn't searched for the graph above, showing a ~120 meter sea level increase to the current interglacial levels. Being blind and unthinking, it didn't strike me until the "discovery" of Cleopatra's palace in Alexandria hit the news, that I should long have expected ancients centers to be undersea, perhaps by as much as 600 meters (almost 2,000 feet!). Many if not most great cities would have been maritme centers. Given that geology has known about glaciation-driven sea level rises for perhaps ?150? years, why have scientists been surprised to find the palace underwater? Why have they been dismissive of "lunatics" looking for Atlantis (perhaps at least one Atlantis for every civilisation - semi-supported by the apparent Mayan "myth" of the same type of lost, submerged city/civilisation)? Robert Schoch's 2012 "Forgotten Civilisations" describes Gobekli Tepe (?spelling?), a site in the South-Western part of Turkey if I remember correctly that a German archaeologist has been excavating since ~?1995?, and which shows advanced, smooth stone pillars. It may date to ~12 kyBP, and it may "establish in part" a basis for expecting very old, advanced civilisations. It seems that most climate scientists and archaeologists, and even many geologists, are as blind and unthinking as I am. At least I'm not pulling a huge salary and benefits, and spending an ancient king's ransom in project expenses, equipment, and instruments, in order to come up with an "oops" moment.
